Postpartum Doulas
Postpartum doulas are trained professionals who support families after birth. They provide practical support, emotional reassurance, and information. Postpartum doulas are present in the new family's home and take on a role similar to that of an experienced grandmother, loving aunt, or best friend. They are not health care professionals, they do not give advice or make judgements, but they do have experience with the transformational power of childbirth.
Lack of social support during the intense time of growth and bonding after birth puts parents at risk for developing mood and anxiety disorders. The Global Doula Project is working for a world where parents are not alone.
Taking care of a newborn baby (or babies) is not a one person job. Traditionally, mothers were surrounded by a community that would provide practical support during this labor intensive time. In today’s society, not only are many new parents taking care of their newborns alone, but they are also healing from their births, tending to the household, taking care of other children, and making sure that they eat and (maybe) squeeze in a shower. It’s not a surprise that perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are on the rise.
We are biologically programmed to need each other.
